A Comprehensive Medical Institution Grown as
the Biggest in Scale in Korea for the Shortest
Period of Time
Hallym University
Medical Center was officially born in March 1982 when
the Medical School of Hallym University was established
under the Ilsong Education Foundation. Its actual start,
however, dates back to December 1971 when Hangang Sacred
Heart Hospital had its grand opening.
At the time
when Hangang Sacred Heart Hospital opened, it had only
250 care beds. With the consecutive opening of Kangnam
Sacred Heart Hospital, Chunchon Sacred Heart Hospital,
Kangdong Sacred Heart Hospital and Hallym University
Sacred Heart Hospital one after another, the total number
of care beds has been increased up to 3,200 beds.
Consequently,
Hallym University Medical Center has witnessed a great
growth both quantitatively and qualitatively during
the record-breakingly short period of time in Korea,
which was sufficient enough to attract a great attention
from the Korean medical circle.
¡å Very
Active in Securing the State-of-the-Art Medical Equipments;
Maintaining the Highest Level of Medical Services
In order
to support such quantitatively vast facilities,
Hallym University Medical Center has steadily increased
the number of clinical instructors covering all areas
as well as the number of professional personnel. With
diligence, patience and order as its management philosophy,
Hallym University Medical Center has at present 4,400
staff in total including 410 faculty members which are
the largest in number in Korea. Under the leadership
of President of Hallym University Medical Center and
Directors of each hospital, all members of 5 hospitals
are performing their responsibilities faithfully.
As for medical
equipments, Hallym University Medical Center has kept
very costly ones from the early days such as MRI, Spiral
CT, ESWL, Prostatrone, Eximer Laser and Mebatrone. The
Center plans to introduce more ultra-modern equipments
continuously for the activation of the Center's special
clinics.
Medical
Services for Patients
¡å Accelerating
the Specialization in Medical Services Well-Matching
to University Hospitals
In 2002,
the number of outpatients visiting 5 hospitals under
the Hallym University Medical Center was 1.7 million
while that of inpatients, 1 million. The average bed
occupancy rate is over 90%, with over 36,000 cases of
operation and anesthesia.
In order
to play a role suitable for university hospitals and
to survive in the age of globalization and unlimited
competition, Hallym University Medical Center has fostered
many medical professionals by area. Judging that it
is urgently necessary to specialize and differentiate
these hospitals, the Center has exerted every single
effort in many respects.
¡å Hangang
Sacred Heart Hospital - the Only Hospital in Asia
Specialized in Burn Care
One of the
representative special clinics is the Burn Center at
Hangang Sacred Heart Hospital. As the best burn care
institution in Korea, the Burn Center treated and cared
workers and students who burned themselves to fight
for democratization of Korea in 1980s. Also, the Burn
Center became further recognized as the best burn care
and treatment institution in Korea both in name and
reality after providing perfect treatment and care to
those who survived from the KAL airplane crash accident
happened in Guam in 1997.
The Burn
Care Task Force Team, which is the only team of its
kind in Korea, provides a systematic treatment from
the admission into to the deschange from the hospital.
For patients of acute burns, a comprehensive care is
provided ranging from the initial fluid theraphy, skin
transplant operation, plastic surgery on burned body,
psychiatric theraphy, rehabilitation theraphy up to
physical theraphy. Such comprehensive medical services
are available since the Team has maintained a system
of co-treatment and co-examination with all clinical
departments related to burn care.
In addition,
the Burn Center is staffed with nurses and theraphy
professionals caring exclusively for burn patients,
and operates independently Department of Nutrition Counceling
and Department of Social Works exclusively for burn
patients. The Burn Center is exerting its efforts continuously
to secure its position as the best and the most specialized
burn care center in Korea both in name and reality.
¡å The
Pancreatic Transplantation Conducted by Hangang
Scared Heart Hospital for the First Time in Korea; Developing
the Unequalled Operation Technique of Transviginal Hystrectomy
The Korea
Gerontology Center at Hangang Scared Heart Hospital
is the first medical institution in Korea opened in
October 1991 to examine and treat exclusively geriatric
illnesses. It also has the Comprehensive Research Institute
for Geriatric Diseases which can conduct researches
on geriatric disorders related to the Department of
Internal Medicine, the Department of Psychiatry and
the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, and even
to the areas of behavioral science and epidemiology.
What is
special about their Center is that the medical team
led by Dr. Dai-Won Yoon, who returned home from U.S.A.
after studying the transplant of pancreas cells and
aquiring the pancreas transplant operation skill, conducted
the pancreatic transplantation in 1986 for the first
time in Korea, which attracted a great attention from
the medical circle in Korea.
Transviginal
Hystrectomy led by the team of the Department of Obstetrics
and Gynecology at Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital is an
unequalled operation skill. The largest number of operations
employing this technique has been performed at Kangnam
Scared Heart Hospital, which also shows the lowest recording
of a Caesarean operation in Korea.
Hallym University
Medical Center has designated the following as its strategically
specialized areas for the future: the Congenital Metabolic
Disorder Clinic and the Digestive Diseases Center at
Chunchon Sacred Heart Hospital; the Organ Transplantation
Clinic and the Heand-and-Neck Cancer Clinic and
the Cardiovascular Diseases Center at Kangdong Sacred
Heart Hospital; and the Cerebrovascular Center, the
Digestive Diseases Center and the Health Promotion Center
at Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital.
¡å
Kidney Transplant from the Brain-Dead First Performed
in Korea;
Liver
Transplant on the Oldest Patient in Korea at Kangdong
Sacred Heart Hospital
Upon
opening, Kangdong Sacred Heart Hospital gained a great
attention from the medical circle because it performed
the kidney transplantation from the brain-dead for the
first time in Korea. Since its opening, 330 cases of
kidney transplantations have been performed at this
hospital. With such a history as a base, Kangdong Sacred
Heart Hospital was officially designated as the Organ
Transplant Center in Korea. It has steadily conducted
liver and bone marrow transplantation.
In addition,
it is greatly expected that the Cardiovascular Disease
Center at Kangdong Sacred Heart Hospital will be further
activated with its state-of-the-art cardiovascular devices
and equipments such as Angiography and Gamma Camera.
Also, the
Hemato-Oncology Clinic has the Cytogenetic Laboratory
and HLA Research Laboratory which pride themselves in
the highest level in Korea. Based on these achievements,
the Clinic is fully equipped with all devices necessary
for bone marrow transplantations. Designated early as
an officially recognized institution for bone marrow
transplantation, the Clinic has provided high quality
medical services.
¡å
The Most Efficient Computerized Information System in
Korea : Pursuing an Electronically Managed Hospital
with the Introduction of PACS System
With
Kangdong Sacred Heart Hospital as a start in early 1995,
all hospitals had drastically improved their medical
service related affairs already by introducing Order
Communication System (OCS). They have quietly carried
out an ambitious plan to achieve an epoch-making improvement
in all services offered to patients. Especially all
hospital affairs, ranging from the reservation for examination
and treatment, actual medical services, laboratory tests,
medication to central supply of meals, were 100% computerized.
The Order
Communication System enables physicians to enter their
data on treatments and prescriptions directly into the
computer so that these data can be conveyed automatically
to individual departments concerned. By doing so, all
kinds of administrative work, which had been done manually,
could be omitted, and hence, this ultra-modern computer
system can drastically shorten the patients' waiting
time.
In addition,
the pharmacy automation devices for automatic drug packing
and automatic printing of drug envelops, for instance,
have been already under operation. All laboratory departments
have also completed their automation, and hence, could
have reduced greatly the test-related waiting time.
The Full PACS system was installed from Hallym University
Sacred Heart Hospital down, as a part of the ambitious
plan to transform all hospitals into e-hospitals. Furthermore,
all the hospitals are preparing for the introduction
of new OCS,
electronic medical record (EMR), and enterprise resource
planning (ERP) to realize the dream of Digital Hospital in near future.
¡å
Family Nurse System Introduced First in Korea
In order
to become hospitals serving for the local communities,
all hospitals have introduced the Family Nurse System
with initiative for patients who can not move freely
due to geriatric illness or chronic disease. This System
operated at Hallym University Medical Center was officially
authorized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare for
the first time among hospitals in Korea. Along with
regular health education programs steadily offered to
local residents, this System has been settled as a successful
institution both internally and externally.
Medical
Welfare Service
¡å
Putting the Sense of Responsibility for Society into
Action by Making Investments
on
Medical Welfare Facilities for Local Residents
Shinlim
Welfare Center, which has the longest history as a medical
welfare facility, has steadily offered various public
health and medical services and unfolded social welfare
projects for low-income residents' health care. The
Center has also provided a variety of cultural and welfare
projects for the community, including the operation
of the Consulting Center for Family Affairs, vocational
training programs, and a number of welfare projects
for children, the young and the old.
Equipped
with various medical facilities for the local people
of Anyang City, Gyonggi-Do Province, Anyang Welfare
Center provides medical services for low-income families
with a close link with Hallym University Sacred Heart
Hospital. While meeting various needs of local residents
through community welfare projects, the Center contributes
to the advancement of social welfare services.
For seniors
aged 60 or older who are living within the administrative
district of Yeongdeungpo-Gu, Seoul, Yeongdeungpo Welfare
Center operates the Senior Information Center, offers
medical rehabilitation services, and provides integrated
welfare services. Through these activities, the Center
helps seniors to enjoy their late lives in a sound physical,
mental, and social environment.
¡å
Operation of Mariana Hospital in Guam in 1970s¡ª The
First Overseas Launching in Korea; Active Participation
at Medical Welfare Services Home and Abroad
The
5 hospitals under Hallym University Medical Center have
unfolded medical welfare services most rapidly whenever
flood or other disasters occur. Last year when the entire
nation suffered from a flood, they unfolded medical
welfare services in Gangwon-Do Province area, which
were evaluated as the most excellent ones nationwide.
Free medical services being unfolded by individual hospitals
have been continued while receiving a positive response
from local residents.
The Hallym
University Medical Center had a keen interested in overseas
medical welfare services from the early days. In the
late 1970s, the Center not only dispatched Korean medical
doctors to Mariana Hospital in Guam but also was directly
involved in the hospital management.
Moreover,
for 2 years from 1996, Hallym University Medical Center
sent a medical service team of large scale at the pure
civilian level to the far back country at Fiji Island
in the South Pacific, which gained a special attention
from the press.
College
of Medicine
¡å
Hallym Medical School as the First-Class University;
the
Amount Transferred from the Foundation Recording the
Highest Level in Korea
The
College of Medicine at Hallym University established
in 1982 has produced so far 1,300 graduates in total
over 15 terms. With cultivating medical doctors of humanity
as its educational goal, Hallym Medical School has exerted
efforts to produce the talented who have a culturally
broad horizon, who can provide primary medical examination
and treatment, who can unfold their knowledge and skill
on the international stage and who know what services
are for the society.
Accordingly,
outstanding graduates of Hallym Medical School have
performed their missions faithfully as educators as
well as medical staff at many prestigious medical schools
and general hospitals home and abroad. Many of them
provide their services to local communities with self-esteem
and pride as Hallym Man.
Despite
its short history of 20 years, the College of Medicine
has positioned itself solidly in the rank of prestigious
medical schools producing the finest medical experts
in Korea thanks to the full support from the Foundation
enough to record a top place among private universities
in Korea in terms of the amount transferred from the
Foundation to the university.
Consequently,
at the comprehensive assessment of medical schools nationwide
conducted in 1995 by the Korea Advanced Education Council,
the College of Medicine at Hallym University stood at
the 3rd place. Also, at the University Evaluation Program
conducted in 1996 by Chung-Ang Daily News, it was recognized
as one of the outstanding schools.
As for the
curriculum of Hallym Medical School, courses for medicines
are offered at Hallym University in Chunchon, while
courses for hospital practices are offered, depending
on the students' choices, vividly at 5 university affiliated
hospitals equipped with perfect environments for clinical
education and training of the highest quality in Korea.
¡å
Medical School Supporters' Association Formed by Spontaneous
Participation of the Students' Parents; Integrated Education
Centering around Autonomous Learning and Problem Solving
The
Medical School Supporters' Association formed in 1991
is a meaningful gathering created through the pure and
spontaneous participation of the students' parents and
the graduates, in which the College of Medicine at Hallym
University takes a great pride.
Inspite
of its short history, this Association has raised a
great amount of fund and granted supports for the welfare
of students at the campus, the students' circle programs
and research activities of the faculty members. In the
future, the Association is expected to make a great
contribution to the development of Hallym Medical School
by expanding further the scope for supports.
The greatest
problem in medical school education used to be that
how fast and correctly the geometrically increasing
knowledge on medical science can be conveyed to the
students within the limited time span. In order to solve
such a problem and to offer education preparing for
the 21st century, the College of Medicine at Hallym
University has established and implemented from early
days an integrated education program centering around
autonomous learning and problem solving instead of the
lecture-dependent conventional education mode.
The program
could be implemented in full scale after in-depth researches
and evaluations over 5 years. Since then, many other
medical schools follwed this model. According to such
a rearrangment of the curriculum, a learning assessment
workshop by newly appointed faculty members is conducted
every year, along with workshops regularly held with
the participation of all faculty members.
The Clinical
Instructors' Activity Reporting System (so-called Faculty
Evaluation System) was initiated 10 years ago for the
first time in Korea by the College of Medicine at Hallym
University. After modifying and supplementing its drawbacks
steadily, the System is now settled as a tool to survive
in the age of unlimited competition.
Training

Character Cultivation Education and Training on the
Job for Personnel Available after the Opening
of Ilsong Training Center; Focusing on the Practice
of Customer Satisfaction
With the
increasing need for personnel training, education programs
have been greatly strengthened from 2002. The System
Construction Team, which was newly established in early
2002, has been in charge of operating several programs
such as: training on the job; computer information education;
theme-specific education; middle managers leadership
training; and customer satisfaction(CS) education. Such
job improvement education programs have upgraded the
atmosphere that all personnel can work with pride as
professionals and with the sense of being united as
one.
In
September 2002, Ilsong Foundation opened The Ilsong
Training Center on the third floor of the 2nd Annex
Building (Ilsong Building) of Hallym University Scared
Heart Hospital. The Ilsong Training Center, with the
total floor space of 182 pyong, has one lecture room
with 60 seats, 2 seminar rooms, a lounge and an office
for course administration and operation. The lecture
room is used for introductory education programs for
newly hired personnel, for education programs by position
and for training programs to improve task performances.
Seminar rooms are used for various small-group activities,
meetings and customer satisfaction (CS) education programs.
¡å
Offering Opportunities for Overseas Training to All
Clinical Instructors;
Operating
the Overseas Training Program for Nurses, the Only
One in Korea
Clinical
instructors have benefited opportunities to participate
at academic conferences held home and abroad as well
as to receive long-term overseas trainings. Most clinical
faculty members at the level of associate professors
and above have already received overseas trainings.
This year, a special measure was taken so that many
clinical staff, doubled in number over the previous
year, can enjoy overseas training, in addition to short-term
overseas training programs to be conducted on a regular
base.
Not only
overseas training programs for clinical instructors
but also those for nurses have been further activated.
This program is the only one overseas training project
for nurses in Korea. For the last 10 years, about 50
nurses were dispatched to Japan and U.S.A for their
practical job training. Recently in 2002, 8 nurses returned
from their overseas training after accomplishing the
goal to acquire advanced nursing techniques at three
medical institutions in Japan: The Hospital Affiliated
with East-Sea University in Japan; Gawajawa University
Hospital; and Gawajawa City Hospital.
Especially,
Hallym University Medical Center has extended its contract
even in 2003 with the Hospital Affiliated with East-Sea
University in Japan which has 1,200 care beds under
24 departments. Both institutions have agreed to expand
the scale of the trainee delegation. Hallym University
Medical Center has almost established a cooperative
relationship successfully with National Nagano Hospital
with 420 beds and Nagasaki University Affiliated Hospital
with 830 beds.
Academic
Research
¡å
The Research Institute of Natural Medicine Standing
at the Highest Level in Korea; The Animal Experiment
Laboratory at Hallym University Contributing Greatly
to Medical Research in Korea
Over
400 full-time faculty members, bigger than the number
of enrolled students at the College of Medicine at Hallym
University, are devoting themselves actively to academic
research projects in addition to student teaching and
medical examination and treatment.
To support
their activities, several medical-related research institutes
have been established. In 1984, the Research Institute
of Health Services was established to carry out research
projects dealing with social aspects of the problems
related to medical services. In 1991, the Research Institute
of Natural Medicine was established and has conducted
actively research activities to identify medical effects
of natural medicines and to develop them as medical
products.
The Research
Institute of Medical Education established in 1988 has
played a key role in improving medical education by
developing the curriculum of medical sciences, the teaching
methodology, learning activities and evaluation methods
suitable for the special nature of medical education.
In 1988, the Research Institute of Human Science and
the Research Institute of Clinical Medical Science were
closed, and the Research Institute of Medical Science
was established instead, which has carried out research
projects covering all areas related to medical science
while operating academic exchange programs.
The Animal
Experiment Laboratory completed in 1986 was developed
into the Animal Experiment Department and then into
the Medical Genetics Class. Consequently, the College
of Medicine at Hallym University could have continued
medical research activities through the most advanced
laboratory for animal experimentations among medical
schools in Korea.
Various
kinds of costly and state-of-the-art research equipments
including the electronic microscope were installed early
when Hallym University was just founded, and have been
utilized for research projects. The establishment of
the Animal Experiment Department of the highest level
in Korea equipped with perfect facilities has stimulated
research activities. Such an investment will be steadily
made with a plan to purchase costly, ultra-modern research
equipments every year and to secure more research facilities.

Korea, by the National Institute of Health.
Accordingly,
the Institute has launched in earnest projects to identify
aging mechanism and to develop anti-aging materials
with research funds totalling 6 billion won granted
for 6 years with 1 billon won per year.
More specifically,
the Institute is supposed to conduct 5 core detailed
projects as follows: exploiting out new aging-related
genes and studying their functions; developing the aging
prediction indicators; inquiring the functional changes
of cells incidental to aging; examining closely the
anaplasia mechanism of internal organs caused by aging;
and developing candidate substances to resist aging
and identifying their pharmacological mechanism.
Hallym Institute
for Genome Applications has exerted all efforts to develop
a Korean-style HLA test and a molecular biologic test
for tuberculosis suitable for actual circumstances of
Korea. As a result, they have designed and are now utilizing
new methods which are cost-effective while keeping a
high level of accurancy and a high redevelopment rate
compared with foreign products.
Five full-time
researchers are currently working in the Institute,
and afterwards 3 faculty members and 20 other staff
will be gradually introduced. The Institute is
emerging both nominally and virtually as one of the
best institutes for genome research in Korea, in that
the Institute is actively implementing the academic
exchange programs with advanced foreign countries as
well as the project for testing Korean bone marrow donors.
The Hallym
University Medical Center has publicly invited clinic
research projects and financially assisted a number
of clinical instructors, motivating them with increased
research funds year by year. The registration fee will
be covered by the Institute for all clinical instructors
participating in conferences and presenting outstanding
papers, and another financial assistance will be granted
for paper publications in the famous domestic and international
academic journals. Such supports are expected to greatly
contribute to their accuumulation of good research achievements
in the future.

Central Task-Force Teams under the Center in October
2002. Having already established a 5-year mid- and long-term
development plan and having drawn a blue-print for 2000s,
they undertook their activities in earnest to realize
the plan and the blue-print.
By
providing medical services of high quality while meeting
the patients` needs and, hence, securing their self-impression,
Hallym University Medical Center will emerge as a model
hospital unfolding a new chapter in the hospital management.
In addition, all staff of the Center do their best to
make their dreams come true: the dreams to make a great
contribution to improving the health of local residents
and to developing the medical circle in Korea as a whole.
